When I was a kid, my mom told me I should chew every bite at least 32 times. Back then I wasn’t sure why I needed to do this tedious and boring thing, but now I know the secret behind it. And that’s better digestion which ultimately leads to weight loss. And girls, it actually works because I tried this for a month and lost almost five kilos without exercising any more than I was. Neat right?

Turns out, there is a scientific explanation behind this weight loss tip
The first few days were a pain in the jaw and I mean literally. I was counting every bite, only swallowing when I had chewed the food in my mouth 32 times. At times, I would get so tired that even though I had two rotis on my plate, I would only eat one. So that was one reason why I lost weight.

But here’s what I realised after the first week: I wasn’t feeling hungry very often. I felt fuller for longer, which was a first for me. I was amazed when I saw research from verifying the changes I was observing in my body. According to them, I was feeling fuller because now I was giving my hormones enough time to signal to my brain that my stomach was full and I don’t need more food. As a result, I wasn’t overeating and felt more satiated.

Interestingly, a study in the journal states that people who eat slowly, tend to weigh less.

This chewing-my-food-32-times funda also helped me get rid of bloating
Before I changed the way I eat, I used to wake up every morning looking like a puffer fish. But that’s bloating for you right? Chewing my food slowly reduced my bloating. That’s because and my gut doesn’t have to work as hard to produce excessive digestive juices. Hence, less bloating.

At the end of one month I was rewarded with weight loss
No doubt, my patience was tested to the T in this entire process. But when I weighed five kilos less on the weighing skill, without changing anything about my workout regimen or diet, I was on cloud nine.

This also made me realize how small things can actually make a lot of difference when it comes to weight loss. Like chewing your food slowly! Who would have thought right?
